A leading authority on the law of patents; 'it was largely due to his efforts that the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852 was passed.' One of the counsel engaged for Birkenhead in the contests concerning the Liverpool and Mersey Docks; his Reports of the committee of the conservators of the Mersey became the standard works of reference relating to that river.
