Joined 7th Fusiliers at Londonderry, 1820; served with the 72nd and 52nd Regts., and the Grenadier Guards; retired as Major, 1830. Succeeded his father as 2nd Bart., Sept. 3, 1826. Had assumed the surname of Verney, in Place of that of Calvert, 1827, on succeeding to the Verney estates at Claydon, Buckinghamshire . on the death of his cousin, Mrs Verney. M.P. for Buckingham, 1832-41; for Bedford, 1847-52; for Buckingham, 1857-74 and 1880-5. P.C. 1885. One of the founders of the Royal Agricultural Society. Married (1) June 30, 1835, Eliza, dau. of Admiral Sir George Johnstone Hope (one of Nelson's Captains at Trafalgar), and had issue; (2) June 23, 1858, Frances Parthenope, eldest dau. of William Edward Nightingale, and sister of Florence Nightingale.
