Examiner of witnesses in the Court of Chancery, 1833-52; raised to the rank of an Earl's son, by Royal Warrant, 1839. M.P. for Wolverhampton, 1835-98; and 'Father' of the House. Judge-Advocate General, 1852-8. P.C., 1853. President of the Poor Law Board, 1859-66. A tireless advocate of the repeal of the Corn Laws. Cobden (in a letter to Lord John Russell) paid a great tribute to him as his forerunner in the race for reform. J.P. and D.L. for Hertfordshire . His statue was erected in Wolverhampton, 1879.
