Preached, about 1802, a famous sermon, 2½ hours long, in defence of the disputed verse in St John's Gospel; concluded 'by leaving the subject to the learned bench of Bishops "who have little to do and do not always do that little."' Resided latterly chiefly at Combe Rectory, near Oxford; scarcely ever appeared in Oxford except to bring in pigs of his own breeding to be sold in the market. Unpopular in his College, where he was known as 'The Devil who looked over Lincoln.' R. of Whitchurch, Shropshire , 1829-34. Married, 1801, Elizabeth, dau. of John Cook, of Cheltenham. Author, controversial sermons and pamphlets, including The Chart and Scale of Truth by which to find the Cause of Error, which embodied a new system of logic, and was admired by Edmund Burke and others.
