Midshipman in H.M.S. Isis, 1802, on the Newfoundland Canada , Station; his Fellowship being in his own words, 'a sort of promotion, which has not often gone along with the rank and dignity of a Midshipman.' Served four years in the Navy and then joined the Army as Second Lieut. in the 95th Rifles, 1806.
Captured in an attack on Buenos Ayres, July 5, 1807, and after a short imprisonment returned to England.
Appointed Governor of the Colony of Sierra Leone , but his efforts to suppress the evils of the apprenticeship system which superseded slavery were ill received, and the Government recalled him within two years.
Joined the 14th Light Dragoons as Lieut., and served in Spain ; on the conclusion of peace exchanged into the 17th Light Dragoons, then serving in India . Major, 65th Regt.; Lieut.-Col., 1829; Col., 1846; Major-General and General, 1868.
On returning to England in 1822 devoted himself to literature and politics.
