Accompanied R. L. Stevenson, his cousin, in the 'canoe-trip' in France , 1876. Exhibited landscape paintings at the Royal Academy and other galleries. Taught painting at Cambridge in association with the Slade Professor. Roscoe Professor of Fine Arts, Liverpool University College, 1880-93. Contributed to the Saturday Review, 1883-9, as critic of painting and music. Art Critic of the Pall Mall Gazette, 1893-1900. Married, 1881, Louisa, dau. of Theodore Pyrland, Esq.
