Succeeded as 9th Bart., 1865, on the death of his uncle, Sir John Maxwell, and assumed the additional name of Maxwell. Elected Rector, of Aberdeen University, 1870, but declined the post. Rector of Edinburgh University, 1872. Chancellor of Glasgow University, 1876. Knight of the Thistle, 1876. Hon. Sec. of the Highland and Agricultural Society, 1841. President of the Glasgow Agricultural Society. Bred shorthorn cattle and Clydesdale horses. Married (1) Apr. 26, 1865, Anna Maria, 3rd dau. of David Leslie Melville, 10th Earl of Leven and Melville, and had issue; (2) Mar. 1, 1877, Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton (aged 69, poetess and granddaughter of Richard Brinsley Sheridan).
