Cricket 'blue,' 1882-5; played for England, captaining the English XI's in Australia, 1887 and in S. Africa.
When a member of the University XI his peculiar method of running up to the wicket when bowling, with the ball withheld from the view of the batsman until the moment of its delivery, earned for him the sobriquet of 'Round the Corner Smith.' On the stage, 1892-1930, with Sir John Hare, Sir George Alexander and Mrs Patrick Campbell.
First appeared in London at the Garrick Theatre in The Notorious Mrs Ebbsmith, 1895.
Went to Hollywood where he met with great success in films, e.g. as Wellington in 'Sixty Glorious Years.' C.B.E., 1938; Knighted, 1944.
Married, Aug. 15, 1896, Isobel, only dau. of Major Alexander Wood, of Abbey Wood, Kent.
Lived latterly at Beverly Hills, California, where he died Dec. 20, 1948.
His ashes were buried in St Leonard's churchyard, Hove, Sept. 7, 1949.
