b . 3 Nov. 1814; er. dau . of Rear-Admiral William Henry Shirreff (1785-1847) and Elizabeth Anne ( er. dau . of the Hon. David Murray). Was at one time engaged to Henry Thomas Buckle ( d . 1861), author of the History of civilisation in England.

*c Resided for some years at Gibraltar where father held government appointment. Warmly supported the foundation of The College for Women; Hon. Mistress, L. and E. 1870 (temp. appointment); helped her sister Mrs Grey to found and acted as Hon. Sec. of the Nat. Union for improving the Educ. of Women of all Classes, 1871, out of which grew the G.P.D.S.T.; one of the original members of the G.P.D.S.T. for which s he worked indefatigably 1872-97, and of which she was elected a Vice-Pres. shortly before her death; was instrumental in setting up a Secondary Tr. Coll. in Bishopsgate 1877 (now the Maria Grey Tr. Coll.) was among the first to advocate introd. of Froebel system into this country; one of founders of Froebel Soc. 1875, its Pres. 1876-97, and frequently read papers at its meetings. Member of the College Cttee. 1870-72; Member of Girton Coll. 1872-97.
