Schiller-Szinessy, Solomon Marcus. Hon. M.A. 1877. Doctor of Philosophy at Jena University. Adm. a member of CHRIST'S, Oct. 18, 1877, as Solomon Mayer. B. [1820], at Old Buda, Hungary. Teacher in Talmudic and Rabbinic 1866-79; Reader, 1879-90. Ordained as a Rabbi. Professor at the Lutheran College of Eperges, Hungary. In 1848 supported the Revolutionary side of the war between Hungary and Austria, and to escape execution, fled to Trieste and thence to Ireland. Minister of the United Community at Manchester. Resigned in 1866 and came to Cambridge, where he engaged in teaching Hebrew and examining the Hebrew MSS. in the University Library. The first Jew in either University to be placed on the Electoral Roll. Author of articles in the Encyclopaedia Britannica and in Smith's Dictionary of the Bible. Died, suddenly, Mar. 11, 1890.
