His knowledge of German greatly assisted him in the adaptation of the lyrics of The Merry Widow and other German operettas.
One of the founders of the Performing Rights Society.
His entry into the theatrical world was a mere chance, due to his catching cold at the University Boat Race and being confined to his home, during which time he wrote a libretto which afterwards, with the collaboration of Dr Osmond Carr, became the basis of a comic opera.
This led to a commission to write Joan of Arc, produced at the Opéra Comique, 1891.
Married, July 3, 1901, Ethel, youngest dau. of Charles J. Wood, M.I.C.E., and had issue.
