V. le Grice, and Christopher Wordsworth, of a small literary Society in Cambridge, 1793. One of the projectors of the short-lived University Magazine of 1795. Serjeant-at-Law, 1808. President of the Court of Justice for the United Colony of Demerara and Essequibo (afterwards British Guiana), 1816-21; on Oct. 6, 1821, after a long disagreement, was suspended by the acting Governor, Lieut.-Gen. John Murray, for having as a supreme Judge usurped the privileges and functions of the executive. Returned to England and appealed to the Privy Council, which in April 1825 gave its decision in his favour. Puisne Judge in Ceylon, 1830-6; Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, 1836-8.
