Started work at the puddling furnaces before he was 10; emigrated with his parents to the U.S.A., 1854, settling at Danville, Pennsylvania. Organist at Danville. Gave a series of concerts in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York, 1865, singing songs of his own composition. Moved to London, 1868, and entered the Royal Academy of Music; bronze medal, 1870; silver medal, 1871. Kept a music school at Danville, U.S.A., 1871-3. Professor of Music at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1873-9. Had a private school of music at Aberystwyth and at Swansea, 1881-8. Lecturer, and subsequently Professor of Music, at University College, Cardiff, 1888-1903. Director of the S. Wales School of Music. Married, at Danville, Jane, dau. of Gomer Thomas, and had issue. Composed oratorios, cantatas, operas, anthems, etc. Died Feb. 17, 1903, at his residence, Cartref, Penarth.
