Parry, Thomas Gambier. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, Mar. 11, 1833. [Only child of Richard, a Director of the Hon. East India Co. (and Mary, dau. of Samuel Gambier, of Shenley Hall, Herts.). B. Feb. 22, 1816. School, Eton.] Matric. Michs. 1833; B.A. 1837; M.A. 1848. Purchased the estate of Highnam, near Gloucester, 1838, and resided there for the rest of his life. J.P. and D.L. for Gloucs.; High Sheriff, 1850. Built a church on his estate, 1848, in place of an earlier one destroyed. 'Highnam is consequently indebted to him for perhaps the most beautiful country church in the kingdom.' Covered its walls with frescoes of his own designing, inventing a process to ensure their permanence to which he gave the name of 'spirit fresco'; it was adopted by Sir Frederic Leighton in his frescoes at the South Kensington Museum, and by Ford Madox Brown. Painted, from his own designs, the frescoes on the roof of the nave of Ely Cathedral, 1862. Also painted frescoes in Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey, working always gratuitously. Founded the Children's Hospital and Home for Incurables and Orphanage at Gloucester and the School of Art there.
