Practised in Bristol from 1810; at the same time studied ethnology and published his Researches into the Physical History of Man in 1813.
Physician to St Peter's Hospital, Bristol, 1810, and to the Bristol Infirmary, 1814.
Made a study of insanity and diseases of the nervous system, and claimed to have been the first to recognise 'moral insanity' as a distinct disease.
