Elphinstone brought him before the Court of Arches, Nov. 27, 1869, for wearing unauthorised vestments and for illegal ceremonies in the Communion Service. He did not appear and was condemned on eight points out of many; the case was then taken before the Privy Council, and, on the death of the promoter in 1870, another was allowed to take his place. The Privy Council decided on nearly all points against Purchas, Jan. 16, 1871, and he was suspended Feb. 7, 1872, but continued to minister at St James' up to his death.
