Architect of the entrance gate of Magdalene College and of the Chapel Court of St John's. His chief work was done in St Paul's, where he designed the choir-school, the choir seats and desks, the marble pulpit and stairs, the Wellington tomb in the Crypt and the memorial to Lord Napier of Magdala. Also responsible for the removal of the Wellington monument to its new position, the re-arrangement of the steps at the West entrance, and the exposure of the remains of the ancient cathedral in the churchyard. Designed the British School at Athens, of which he was Director, 1886-7 and 1890-1. Married, 1856, Harriette, dau. of Francis Gibbes, surgeon, of Harewood, Yorks. Author, Principles of Athenian Architecture, and a work predicting eclipses, etc. Died Feb. 15, 1903, at Wimbledon. Portrait, by Sargent, at the R.I.B.A., and a copy in Magdalene College.
