Made a collection of early mathematical works, which after his death were presented by his brothers to the College library. A famous Alpine climber, 1870-77; made the first ascent of Monte Rosa from Macunaga in 1872. Presented 100 volumes of printed music, vocal and instrumental, together with a number of books of reference in the same subject, to the Fitzwilliam Museum, 1880; and in each of the next years gave the same number; with other yearly gifts, the Pendlebury Collection amounted to about 2000 volumes.
