Appointed Milton's colleague in the Latin Secretaryship, 1657 . M.P. for Hull for 20 years, 1659, 1660-78 . Accompanied Charles Howard, Earl of Carlisle, on his Embassy to Moscow, as secretary, 1663-5 . Published an account of the mission, 1669 . Engaged in ecclesiastical controversy.
