Died Apr. 23, 1847, 'of famine fever caught when visiting his tenants.' He had previously broken the entail, to the exclusion of his brother Richard in Canada, and left his vast estates heavily encumbered.
His daughter, Mary Letitia, 'the Princess of Connemara,' assumed for herself and her husband (Col. Arthur Gonne Bell, of Brookhill, Co. Mayo), by Royal licence, the surname and arms of Martin.
She was forced to sell the remaining portion of her patrimony (197,000 acres) by the pressure of the famine, the property passing to the Law Life Assurance Society.
