Ord. deacon (St Asaph) 1835. C. of Whittington, Salop, 1835-6. I. of St Jude's, Glasgow, 1836-43. Minister of Percy Chapel, St Pancras, London, 1843-55. Writer of religious poems, which were extravagantly praised in the press and severely criticised by Macaulay. A popular and eloquent preacher, nicknamed 'Robert the Devil' by Thomas Hood, after a poem he wrote entitled Satan, 1830. The Times of April 8, 1842, said: 'We fear that he is incorrigible to criticism, but he richly merits its lash for his reiterated offences against good taste and common sense.'
