(Edin.). Hon. Secretary of the Davy Faraday Research Laboratory, 1896-1938. Did much research in pure and applied chemistry, and in electrochemistry. President, Société de Chimie Industrielle de la France. A keen archaeologist and antiquary, making many important discoveries during 30 years' excavation in Egypt. President of the Egypt Exploration Society, 1928-38. Knighted, 1932. Made many great benefactions during his lifetime. Of 9, Cavendish Square, London, W.
