Undertook a series of experiments which resulted in the extraction of benzol from coal-tar.
The description of a 'balloon machine' constructed in Paris, 1850, led him to investigate the subject of aeronautics.
Delivered a course of lectures at the Royal Institution on the chemistry of metals, 1851-2. Visited Paraguay, 1852-3, of which country he left a careful description in his letters.
Author, Theory of Salts, and Aerial Navigation. 'A great soul stirred by mighty conceptions and the love of mankind.' Died, unmarried, from burns incurred during an experiment, Feb. 17, 1855, aged 35.
