Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, June 11, 1851. Called to the Bar, Nov. 17, 1855. Conveyancer in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners' office, 1858-88. Poet and man of letters. F.S.A. Author, Benoni; Verses New and Old; Dorothy, a Country Story (which was praised by Robert Browning for its 'consummate craftsmanship'); Poems, Chiefly Lyric and Elegiac and Relicta. Latin teacher at the Working Men's College, 1860-70. Resided at Pyrford, Surrey. Died, s.p., Jan. 29, 1910. The publication of his will disclosed that in 1873 he had married his servant, Hannah Cullwick; owing to her refusal to leave her station, the marriage was kept secret from all save a few friends. Bequeathed many books to Trinity College and, the British Museum refusing them, also two filled deed-boxes, on condition that they were not to be opened before Jan. 1, 1950.
