'He had to raise, organise and train a small army, to instruct them in duties hitherto unknown in England, and to teach them to discharge their office with patience and consideration.' Roughly handled by the mob during the Hyde Park riots, July, 1866. C.B., 1848; K.C.B., 1851. Married, 1831, Georgiana Marianne Catherine, eldest dau. of Thomas Carvick, of Wyke, Yorks., and had issue. Died Dec. 26, 1868, in London; buried at Kensal Green, where there is a monument to his memory.
