Advocate at the Cape, 1890; K.C. M.P. for Namaqualand, 1890-8; for Somerset East, 1898-1908. A strong adherent of Cecil Rhodes. Speaker of the Cape Parliament (under Merriman's administration) 1908-9. First Speaker of the House of Assembly, Union of South Africa, 1909-15; did much to stimulate the 'Convention Spirit.' One of the delegation who brought the draft of the South African Act to England for confirmation by the Imperial Government. Knighted, 1911. Took great interest in the fruit industry of South Africa. Author, The Dominion of Africanderdom; Further South African Recollections. Died Sept. 16, 1936, at 10, Palace Court, London, W., whilst on a visit to England; buried at Peaslake, near Shere, Surrey.
