Assistant Master at a private school at Devonport, and at Queen's College, Taunton, 1854-8. Entered the Wesleyan Ministry, 1858. Classical Tutor at Wesley College, Richmond, Surrey, 1858-74. First Head Master of the Leys School, Cambridge, 1874-98. Member of the Legal Hundred of the Wesleyan Connexion, 1872. President of the Wesleyan Conference, 1890. One of the Committee of Revisers of the New Testament, also Secretary to the Cambridge Committee for the revision of the Apocrypha. 'As a Greek scholar he was among the foremost of his time, while he was also a learned Hebraist, an able mathematician and a devoted student of English Literature.' Married Hannah, dau. of the Rev. Samuel Hope. Author, History of the English Bible, etc. Died suddenly, Feb. 5, 1898, whilst walking near the Leys School. M.I. in the Wesleyan Church, Hills Road, Cambridge.
