Also author of Cambridge Characteristics in the 17th Century; The Ancient African Church; The New Reformation; The Schools of Charles the Great; (with S. R. Gardiner) An Introduction to English History; (With Canon Masterman) The Age of Milton; History of St John's College, Cambridge, etc.
As a young man, in 1871, had served a term of imprisonment for an attack upon his sister-in-law, with a carving-knife.
Always eccentric in his conduct, many stories were current about his intolerance of the slightest noise when lecturing and of his threats to those with whom he came unexpectedly in contact.
Lived at 68, Lensfield Road, Cambridge.
Died Nov. 22, 1917.
