Lawes [post Lawes-Wittewronge], Charles Bennet. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, June 12, 1862. [Only] s. of John Bennet (1894). B. Oct. 3, 1843, at Teignmouth, Devon. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1862; B.A. 1866. Rowing 'blue,' 1865; athletics 'blue' (Mile), 1864. Sculptor. First President of the Incorporated Society of British Sculptors. Succeeded his father, Aug. 31, 1900, as 2nd Bart. Assumed for himself and his heirs the additional surname (and arms) of Wittewronge by Royal Licence, 1902. Chairman of the Lawes Agricultural Trust. Had some success as a sculptor, exhibiting works at the Royal Society of British Artists. Defendant in a libel action brought against him by Richard Claude Belt, a sculptor, 1882; the case, which was decided in Belt's favour, caused considerable excitement, leading artists acting as witnesses on both sides.
