Represented Albany in the Provincial Congress of May 21, 1775, the first legislative Assembly in New York elected by popular vote. Member of the Assembly, 1777-9; Speaker, 1778-9. Member of Continental Congress, 1784. His war services included Commissary of Stores and Provisions for New York from July 17, 1775; Deputy Commissary-General, 1775; resigned, Sept. 7, 1776, because of a dispute with the Commissary-General.
