Loftus, William Kennett. Adm. pens. at CAIUS, Apr. 10, 1840, age 19. [S. of William Kennett, naturalist, geologist and explorer (for whom see Welford, Men of Mark 'twixt Tyne and Tweed) and grandson of a well-known coach-proprietor in Newcastle-on-Tyne. B. c. 1821 at Rye, Sussex (Venn gives at Linton, Kent). Schools, Newcastle Grammar, Old Park, Durham, and Twickenham.] Matric. Michs. 1840. Secretary to the Newcastle Natural History Society; his interest in geology attracted the attention of Professor Sedgwick, who proposed him as F.G.S. Geologist on the staff of Sir William Fenwick Williams on the Turco-Persian Frontier Commission, 1849-52. Travelled from Baghdad to Basrah, visiting objects of archaeological interest, including Ur of the Chaldees: remitted collections and a report to the British Museum. Sent to Babylon and Nineveh by the Assyrian excavation fund, 1853-5, bringing home further collections of tablets, now in the British Museum. Appointed to the Geological Survey of India, 1856 but, following repeated attacks of fever, his health broke down. Author, Travels and Researches in Chaldaea and Susiana, etc. Died Nov. 1858, on board the Tyburnia, whilst returning to England from Rangoon. (Venn, II. 250; Boase, II. 475; D.N.B.; Geologist, II.
