Member of Royal Commissions on Public Records, on the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and on Historical monuments. A trustee of the British Museum. Took charge, with C. E. Kempe, of the releading of the chapel windows, an immense task which led to many interesting discoveries. As Dean it was his aim to make the chapel "not only the Cathedral of the town but the focus of the College." His publications comprise many editions of apocryphal writings and medieval MSS., culminating (in 1924) in The Apocryphal New Testament, and the series of catalogues of MSS. and of volumes for the Roxburgh Club. Catalogued the Fitzwilliam MSS., and then proceeded to one College library after another, to cathedral libraries, Lambeth, and the Yates Thompson and Pierpont Morgan collections. The same kind of instinct developed towards sculpture and painting is exemplified by his identification of the hundreds of mutilated figures in the Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral [ Cambridgeshire ], or in the letterpress of the paintings in Eton Chapel [ Buckinghamshire ]. Enjoyed story-telling to the King's choir-boys, and thus originated his Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, A Warning to the Curious, and Twelve Medieval Ghost Stories . Succeeded Warre as Provost of Eton [ Buckinghamshire ], 1918-36. His gratitude to Henry VI as Royal Founder both of King's and Eton was intensified from the time when he and Warre, in 1910, obtained permission to search in St George's Chapel, Windsor [ Berkshire ], for the King's bones; when found they were reverently wrapped in white silk and reburied. Died unmarried June 12, 1936, at Eton [ Buckinghamshire ]. Buried there. Brother of Sydney R. (1874). ( Eton Sch. Lists; King's Coll. Adm.
