and took up writing as a career. His chief work was the Dissertation on the
Pernicious Effects of Gaming
(1st ed. 1783, 3rd, 1812), by which he twice
gained a prize of 50 guineas offered by an anonymous donor through the
University. In 1784 his Dissertation on Duelling gained him a second
prize, which also reached a 3rd edition in 1812. His Dissertation on
Suicide
, 1785, gained him a third prize of 50 guineas. The three
Dissertations were published together in 1812. Also wrote Happiness
and Rights
, pronounced to be 'an excellent and judicious answer' to Tom
Paine's Rights of Man; The Captive Monarch, a tragedy in 5 acts;
Edginton, a novel, and Some Principles of Civilisation, with
detached thoughts on the Promotion of Christianity in British India
, 1815.
Died Dec. 7, 1835, at Hertingfordbury, near Hertford. Brother of Samuel (1766)
