Hey, Richard. Adm. pens. (age 18) at MAGDALENE, June 23, 1764. [4th] s. of Richard, of Pudsey, Yorks. B. there Aug. 11, 1745. School, Leeds (Mr Moore). Matric. Michs. 1764; Scholar, 1765; B.A. (3rd Wrangler) 1768; 1st Chancellor's medal, 1768; M.A. 1771. Fellow of Sidney, 1768-78. LL.D. 1779 (per Lit. Reg.). Fellow and tutor of Magdalene, 1782-96. Esquire Bedell, 1772-5. Called to the Bar, Middle Temple, 1771. Adm. Advocate, Court of Arches, 1778. Adm. into Doctors' Commons, but, obtaining no practice, retired from the Bar and took up writing as a career. His chief work was the Dissertation on the Pernicious Effects of Gaming (1st ed. 1783, 3rd, 1812), by which he twice gained a prize of 50 guineas offered by an anonymous donor through the University. In 1784 his Dissertation on Duelling gained him a second prize, which also reached a 3rd edition in 1812. His Dissertation on Suicide, 1785, gained him a third prize of 50 guineas. The three Dissertations were published together in 1812. Also wrote Happiness and Rights, pronounced to be 'an excellent and judicious answer' to Tom Paine's Rights of Man; The Captive Monarch, a tragedy in 5 acts; Edginton, a novel, and Some Principles of Civilisation, with detached thoughts on the Promotion of Christianity in British India, 1815.
