Philip HOWARD M.A. 1576 . Educated at ST JOHN'S. Known by the courtesy title of Earl of Surrey. 1st s. of Thomas (1564), 4th Duke of Norfolk. B. 1557 . Summoned to the Peers as Earl of Arundel, Jan., 1580/1. Became a Roman Catholic, 1584 . In an attempt to leave England be was captured and subsequently, 1589, condemned to death for treason. The sentence was not carried out, but be remained a prisoner. Died in the Tower [ London ], 19 Nov., 1595. Brother of William (1577) and Thomas (1605), father of Thomas (1605). ( D.N.B. ; A. B.
