[and his second wife, Fanny, dau. of Daniel Booth, Esq., of Hutton Hall, Essex]. [B. Aug. 28, 1770.] School, Paul's Cray, Kent. Kept two terms by residence, then re-adm. Fell.-Com. Sept. 19, 1788. Matric. Easter, 1791. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, June 11, 1787. Cornet, 11th Dragoons, Apr. 5, 1793; Lieut., June 8, 1793; Major, Strathspey Highlanders, 1794; transferred to 67th Foot, 1795; Lieut.-Col., 1796. Went with his Regt. to St Domingo, 1796, and to Jamaica, 1798. Transferred to 88th Foot (The Connaught Rangers). Spent two years in Nova Scotia; went to India, 1799. Returned to England, 1804, bearing despatches from Lord Wellesley. Col., 2nd Batt., 8th Foot, 1805. Went again to the W. Indies, and was at the capture of Martinique, 1809. Appointed Brigadier on the staff of the British forces at Cadiz; Major-General, commanding 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, in Portugal. Killed at the battle of Albuera, May 16, 1811, while leading his brigade against the enemy. 'I understand that it was impossible for anyone to behave better than he did throughout the terrible scene...he actually fell waving his hat and cheering his brigade on to the charge' (Letter from Wellington to Lord Wellesley, quoted in D.N.B.).
