Hitchins, the Rev. Malachi (or Malachy) .B.A. 1785, incorp. from Oxford; M.A. 1785. Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, Mar. 8, 1785. [Youngest s. of Thomas. B. at Little Trevince, Gwennap, Cornwall. Bapt. May 18, 1741. School, Gwennap.] Matric. from Exeter College, Oxford, Oct. 10, 1763, age 22; B.A. (Oxford) 1781. According to Polwhele, when a boy he worked as a miner and then in a stamping-mill. Went to Bideford in 1765 to assist Benjamin Down in completing his map of Devonshire. Married, Jan. 10, 1764, Joanna Hawkins, and had issue, four sons. With her acquired some fortune, with which he decided to obtain a University degree, and went to Oxford. Engaged in connection with Greenwich Observatory, 1767-1809; at first as computer and later as comparer. Resided for some time at the Observatory, where, in 1769, during the absence of a member of the staff, he observed the usual stars and planets and the transit of Venus; his observations are recorded in Maskelyne's, Observations made at Greenwich, I. 151-62. As comparer he verified the calculations of the Nautical Almanack. Ord. deacon (Bath and Wells) July 7, 1765; priest, Sept. 22, 1765. V. of Hennock, Devon, 1772-5.
