1843; priest, 1844. No curacies recorded. V. of Brading, Isle of Wight,
1846-62. Deprived of his benefice by the Court of Arches, for expressions in
his Sermons on Important Subjects, held to be derogatory to the
Thirty-nine Articles, 1861. The sentence, which was confirmed by the Judicial
Committee to the Privy Council, June 6, 1862, is said to have been the first
enforcement for three centuries of the Act of 13 Elizabeth. Editor of the
Journal of Anthropology. Described by D.N.B. as a 'heterodox
divine.' Married, Feb. 22, 1848, Emily Mary, [p.312] dau. of James Harrison,
of Sandown, Isle of Wight. Lived in retirement at Esher, Surrey, and died May
