Hartog, Numa Edward. Adm. pens. at TRINITY, May 3, 1865. [Elder] s. of Alphonse [Professor of French, of Carlton Hill Villas, Camden Road, London]. B. May 20, 1846, in London. School, University College School. Matric. at London Univ., 1862; B.Sc., London, 1864, 'obtaining honours wholly without precedent.' Matric. Michs. 1865; Scholar, 1867; B.A. (Senior Wrangler and second Smith's prize) 1869. The first Jew to be Senior Wrangler, being admitted to his degree by special Grace of the Senate without taking the usual oath. 'His inability to obtain a Fellowship by reason of his faith gave rise to much comment.' It was claimed that in consequence of his success Jewish disabilities were removed in both Universities by the passing of the Test Act, June 16, 1871. He gave evidence before the House of Lords on this subject. Adm. to the Inner Temple, May 26, 1864. Held a post in the Treasury for a short time and subsequently entered the office of Mr Thring, Parliamentary draftsman. Died June 19, 1871, of small-pox, at Belsize Square, Hampstead.
