again in Gladstone's fourth administration, 1892-5. Endeavoured to reunite the
Liberal party. Persuaded Gladstone to repudiate Parnell's leadership of the
Irish party after the divorce proceedings, Nov. 1890. Carried the Home Rule
Bill through the Commons. Leader of the House of Commons under Lord Rosebery,
1894. Introduced the famous Death Duties Budget. Resigned Leadership of the
Liberal Party, 1898. Opposed to extreme imperialistic policy; denounced the
Boer War, 1900, and stood for Free Trade in opposition to Chamberlain's fiscal
reform proposals, 1903. Married (1) Nov. 5, 1859, Maria Theresa, dau. of
Thomas Henry Lister; (2) Elizabeth, widow of J. P. Ives and dau. of John L.
Motley, the historian. Succeeded to the family estates at Nuneham-Courtenay,
Oxon., 1904. One of the last and greatest of the old school of
Parliamentarians. Died Sept. 30, 1904. Buried at Nuneham-Courtenay. Father of
