Hippisley (or Hippesley), Sir John Cox (or Coxe), Bart.Adm. Fell.-Com. at TRINITY, June 30, 1811. Elder s. of William, and Anne Webb, of Yatton, Somerset. B. 1748. 'The name of Coxe was that of his paternal grandmother, Dorothy, only dau. of William Coxe, of East Harptree, Somerset, wife of John Hippisley, of Yatton, Somerset.' Matric. from Hertford College, Oxford, Feb. 3, 1764, age 16; D.C.L., Oxford, 1776. Matric. Easter, 1811; M.A. 1811, on the occasion of the installation of the Duke of Gloucester as Chancellor. F.S.A.; F.R.S. Adm. at the Inner Temple, 1766. Called to the Bar, 1771. Bencher, 1803. Treasurer, 1816. Employed in Diplomatic missions, 1779-80, and then entered the service of the E. India Co.; paymaster at Tanjore, 1786; held offices of importance during the war with Hyder Ali and his son Tippoo; resigned and returned to England, 1789. Resided in Italy, 1792-6, and was engaged in negotiations with the Vatican which were acknowledged in flattering terms by the English Government. In 1796 successfully negotiated the marriage of the Duke of Würtemberg with the Princess Royal of England, for which service he was created a baronet, Apr. 30, 1796; a Commissioner and Trustee of the royal marriage settlement. Successfully pressed the claims for relief of the last survivor of the Stuarts, Henry Benedict, Cardinal York. Recorder of Sudbury, Suffolk, 1790. M.P. for Sudbury in five Parliaments, 1790-6 and 1802-18. Sheriff of Berks., 1800-1. Vice-President and firm supporter of the Literary Fund Society. Member of the Government Committee of the Turkey Co. One of the first managers of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Married (1) 1780, Margaret, dau. of Sir John Stuart, Bart., of Allanbank, Berwickshire, and had issue; (2) Feb. 16, 1801, Elizabeth, dau. of Thomas Horner, of Mells Park, Somerset, and widow of Henry Hippisley Coxe, of Ston Easton Park, Somerset, M.P. for Somerset; by her he became owner of Ston Easton Park, but had no issue.
