1871; Mus.D. 1872. His Mus.B. exercise produced so favourable an impression
upon the Professor of Music that he offered to accept the work as an exercise
for the Mus.D. Organist at Queen's College, Birmingham, 1859-62. Articled to
Dr Monk, of York Minster. Won the Mendelssohn Scholarship, 1865, and studied
at Leipzig for 2½ years. Conductor of Birmingham Philharmonic Union, 1870-86;
also at Stone, Stafford, Walsall and Stoke. [p.310] Conductor of Wolverhampton
Festival Choral Society, 1881-6; of N. Staffs. Festival, Hanley, 1888-99; of
Birmingham Festival Choral Society, 1895, and Birmingham Musical Festival,
1897. Had a widespread influence as a teacher. Composed cantatas, anthems,
songs, overtures, organ music, etc. His Maid of Astolat was performed
under his own direction on the occasion of the visit of the Prince of Wales to
Hanley, 1897. Died June 11, 1900, at Birmingham. (British Musical
