Hope, William. Adm. pens. (age 18) at TRINITY HALL, Mar. 10, 1852. [Elder] s. of John, Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland [and Jessie Scott Irving]. B. [Apr. 12, 1834], in Edinburgh. School, private. Matric. Michs. 1852. Entered the Army, Apr. 12, 1855, as Lieut., 7th Regt., Royal Fusiliers. Served in the Crimea, 1855-6; awarded the Victoria Cross for a very gallant action on June 18, 1855: 'After the troops had retreated on the morning of the 18th June, 1855, Lt. W. Hope, being informed ... that Lt. Hobson was lying outside the trenches badly wounded, went out to look for him, and found him lying in the old agricultural ditch running towards the left flank of the Redan. He then returned and got four men to bring him in. Finding, however, that Lt. Hobson could not be moved without a stretcher he then ran back across the open, to Egerton's Pit, where he procured one and carried it to where Lt. Hobson was lying. All this was done under a very heavy fire from the Russian batteries' (London Gazette, May 5, 1857). 'In Nov. 1855, there was a great explosion in the British lines, and a windmill which formed our main magazine was threatened by the resulting fire. Gen. Straubensee asked for volunteers to climb the walls of the mill and cover them with wet tarpaulins and blankets, an undertaking of very great danger. Lt. Hope and 25 men at once volunteered to do this, and succeeded in saving the magazine.' Received the Sardinian medal for military valour, conferred by King Victor Emmanuel. Retired, 1857.
