War correspondent for the Pall Mall Gazette in Italy, 1866; followed Garibaldi's force in its advance to the Trentino. In Australasia and America, 1869-71. Joined the staff of the Pall Mall Gazette, 1871. Made a special study of Indian questions, and advocated self-government for India. Became a Socialist after reading Karl Marx, in 1880; read Das Kapital on board ship during a business journey to America. Founded the Democratic Federation, later the Social Democratic Federation. Led many agitations among the unemployed; tried, and acquitted, for his part in the 'West End riots' arising out of a meeting in Trafalgar Square, 1886. Vigorously opposed the South African War. Helped to form the National Socialist Party in 1916. Labour representative on the Consumers' Council, Ministry of Food, during the war of 1914-19.
