Hyne, Charles John Cutcliffe Wright. Adm. at CLARE, June 14, 1884. [S. of the Rev. Charles Wright Noble (next), V. of Bierley, Yorks. B. May 11, 1865, at Bibury, Gloucs. President of the Clare Alpine Club; on one occasion jumped across the canyon which then divided the Chapel from Trinity Hall, leaving there a marmalade pot which long remained as a token of his achievement. Of Kettlewell, and of Heaton Lodge, Bradford, Yorks. Well known as an indefatigable traveller in many remote parts of the world, but particularly as the creator of 'Captain Kettle,' a character at one time considered second only to 'Sherlock Holmes.' Had various hair-breadth escapes during his exciting and strenuous life. At an earlier stage in his career as Aunt Ermyntrude, in a periodical called Sweet Violets, solved the problems (at £1 an article) of the housemaids who sought his guidance. In addition to the 'Captain Kettle' stories, also the author, amongst many other novels, of Honour of Thieves; Recipe for Diamonds; My Joyful Life; and Wishing Smith, the strange adventures of the Cambridge reader of stratospheric physics who discovered how to bring about the fulfilment of his wishes.
