Hamilton, Sir Edward. Adm. Fell.-Com. at EMMANUEL, Mar. 22, 1802. [Younger s. of Capt. Sir John (for whom see D.N.B.). B. Mar. 12, 1772.] Matric. Lent, 1803; M.A. 1803. Said to have served in his father's ship in the W. Indies, 1779-81, after which he went to school at Guildford. Served in the Standard, 1787; Lieut. of the Dido, 1793; engaged at siege of Bastia and reduction of Girolata fort, 1794; served in Victory, 1794-6; commanded Comet, 1796, and went to the W. Indies; advanced to post rank and command of Surprise, on convoy service to Newfoundland, 1797, and to Jamaica, 1798, under Hyde Parker. Severely wounded in capture of the Hermione at Puerto Cabello, S. America, 1799, for which action he was knighted, and presented with the [p.213] freedom of the City of London and a sword from the Jamaica House of Assembly. Captured by the French, 1800; soon exchanged and appointed to the Trent. Engaged in blockade off N. France, 1801. Tried by court-martial, 1802, for seizing up in the main rigging the gunner and his mates, who he alleged, had disobeyed his orders: the court found that the offence of the men was trivial, and their punishment excessive and illegal; probably a head-wound had affected his brain. Dismissed the service, but reinstated a year later. Commanded the royal yacht, 1806-19. Rear-Admiral, 1821; Vice-Admiral, 1837; Admiral, 1846. K.C.B., 1815. Created Bart., 1818. Brother of Admiral Sir Charles, for whom see D.N.B. Married, 1804, Frances, dau. of John Macnamara, of Llangoed Castle, Anglesey, and had issue. Lived latterly at Marlborough House, Hants. Died Mar. 21, 1851, in London. (D.N.B.; Burke, P. and B.) | Sir Edward HAMILTON Approx. lifespan: 17721851 Fell.-Com.
