Hamilton, William

Rev. Anthony (1755), D.D., and Anne. B. Jan. 9, 1777, in St
Martin-in-the-Fields, London. School, Harrow [where he was accidentally lamed
for life]. Matric. Michs. 1795, as William. Secretary to Lord Elgin,
Ambassador at Constantinople, 1799. On a mission to Egypt, in 1801, saved the
famous trilingual Rosetta stone from the French, who were removing it contrary
to Treaty arrangements, and superintended the transport to England of the
Elgin marbles, in 1802. Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs, 1809-22. In 1815,
took a leading part in compelling the French to restore to Italy the works of
art taken from that country. Minister at Naples, 1822-5. F.S.A., 1804. F.R.S.,
1813. Treasurer of the Royal Institution, 1832-49. A founder of the R.G.S.,
1833. Trustee of the British Museum, 1838-58. Author, Ægyptica, an
account of ancient and modern Egypt, containing a translation of the Rosetta
stone. Died July 11, 1859, at Bolton Row, London. Brother of Anthony (1796);
