Studied at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, and in 1839 at St Bartholomew's
Hospital, London. M.R.C.S., 1841. L.S.A., 1842. F.R.C.S., 1844. Surgeon at
Addenbrooke's, Cambridge, 1842-94.] Matric. Lent, 1847; M.B. 1852; M.D. 1859.
Fellow of King's, 1884-96. Hon. Fellow of Downing, 1869. Deputy-Professor of
Anatomy, 1847-66; Professor of Anatomy, 1866-83. Hunterian Orator, 1879. Rede
Lecturer, 1880. Hon. D.Sc., Dublin, 1892. F.R.S., 1859. Knighted, Jan. 1,
1891. In 1883 resigned the Professorship of Anatomy for the newly founded, but
unpaid, Professorship of Surgery, which he held until his death. Founder and
Principal of the short-lived Humphry Hostel, 1859. 'Beginning as a general
practitioner, poor and without influence, Humphry became the most influential
man in the University of Cambridge, and converted its insignificant medical
school into one which is world-renowned' (D.N.B.). First President of
the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, 1887. President of the
Pathological Society of London, 1891-3. Gave many additions to the Museums of
Anatomy and Pathology. 'He was most liberal and in large matters profusely
generous.' Married, 1848, Mary, dau. of Daniel Robert McNabb, of Epping Place,
Essex. Lived latterly at Grove Lodge. Died Sept. 24, 1896. His bust was
presented to Addenbrooke's Hospital, and his portrait is in the Fitzwilliam
Museum. Brother of William G. (1832); father of Alfred P. (1869). (Burke,
