Composed 'Ode on the birth of the Prince of Wales,' published in Cambridge collection and reprinted in G. Mag., Jan. 1763. Adm. at the Middle Temple, June 13, 1766. Married (1) 1769, Eliza, dau. of Dean Ball; (2) 1809, Mary Welford. Had an illegitimate son, b. 1780, who was adopted by his wife. A friend of William Cowper and of Blake, who illustrated his work 'Ballads founded on Anecdotes on Ahania.' A correspondent of Sir Walter Scott, 1805-16. Declined the Laureateship, 1790. His most successful poem, 'Triumphs of Temper', was ridiculed by Byron in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. Published a Life of Cowper, 1803. His Life of Romney published 1809, was coldly received and fiercely attacked by John Romney. Towards the end of his life, retired to Felpham, Sussex. Died there Nov. 12, 1820.
