Apprenticed to a cooper until he was nearly 20; taught himself elementary
mathematics, then became master of a small school at Bishop's Tawton. Later
Assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. Studied Latin and Greek, and
qualified himself for Holy Orders. C. of Constantine, Cornwall, 1779-83. C. of
Green's Norton, Northants., 1789-90. V. of Potterspury, 1790-1827. F.R.S.,
1796; Copley Medal, 1798, for a paper on physical astronomy. Furnished
calculations and tables on which the Minister for War (Windham) based his new
military system. Married, Nov. 10, 1794, Anne Brock, of N. Tawton, Devon, and
had issue, an only son. Author, Mathematical Essays, etc. Died Apr. 5,
1827. Buried at Potterspury. (Northants. Clergy; D.N.B., which gives
'died, Mar. 1827.')
