[2nd surviving] s. of Alfred, M.D., of Brighton [and Julia Elizabeth, dau. of James Sebright, official in Postal Service]. B. Sept. 16, 1858, at Brighton. School, Rugby. Clerk in a tea merchant's office before coming to Cambridge. Matric. Michs. 1877; B.A. 1883. Adm. at the Inner Temple, Nov. 11, 1880. Called to the Bar, 1883. K.C., 1898. Practised in London and on the South Eastern Circuit and Sussex Sessions. Recorder of Guildford, 1916-27. Knighted, 1917. M.P. for Southport, 1900-6; for East Toxteth (Liverpool), 1910-16. One of the most brilliant advocates of his day; his record in defending men charged with murder unequalled by any counsel of his generation. A libel case against the Daily Mail in 1901 procured him heavy damages, but his conduct was strongly criticised in the Court of Appeal and provoked hostile references in the Press. 'Few sensational cases seemed complete without him.' An ardent spiritualist, and well known as a collector of antique silver. Died 'early in the morning' Feb. 25, 1927, in London. (D.N.B.; Rugby Sch.
