Hall (post Marshall Hall), Edward Marshall.
Adm. pens. at ST JOHN'S, June 14, 1877. [2nd surviving] s. of Alfred, M.D., of
Brighton [and Julia Elizabeth, dau. of James Sebright, official in Postal
Service]. B. Sept. 16, 1858, at Brighton. School, Rugby. Clerk in a tea
merchant's office before coming to Cambridge. Matric. Michs. 1877; B.A. 1883.
Adm. at the Inner Temple, Nov. 11, 1880. Called to the Bar, 1883. K.C., 1898.
Practised in London and on the South Eastern Circuit and Sussex Sessions.
Recorder of Guildford, 1916-27. Knighted, 1917. M.P. for Southport, 1900-6;
for East Toxteth (Liverpool), 1910-16. One of the most brilliant advocates of
his day; his record in defending men charged with murder unequalled by any
counsel of his generation. A libel case against the Daily Mail in 1901
procured him heavy damages, but his conduct was strongly criticised in the
Court of Appeal and provoked hostile references in the Press. 'Few sensational
cases seemed complete without him.' An ardent spiritualist, and well known as
a collector of antique silver. Died 'early in the morning' Feb. 25, 1927, in
London. (D.N.B.; Rugby Sch. Reg.; Law Lists; Who's Who; The Times, Feb.
25, 1927.)
